X-WR-CALDESC:1 February 1943: SIS began Venona project. You can also read a
variety of VENONA-related documents via the link (to NSA) at the bottom o
 f the page.\n\nBackground info from the NSA Web site:\n\nThe U.S. Army's S
ignal Intelligence Service\, the precursor to the National Security Agency
\, began a secret program in February 1943 later codenamed VENONA. The mis
sion of this small program was to examine and exploit Soviet diplomatic co
mmunications but after the program began\, the message traffic included es
pionage efforts as well.\n\nAlthough it took almost two years before Ameri
can cryptologists were able to break the KGB encryption\, the information
gained through these transactions provided U.S. leadership insight into So
viet intentions and treasonous activities of government employees until th
e program was canceled in 1980.\n\nThe VENONA files are most famous for ex
posing Julius (code named LIBERAL) and Ethel Rosenberg and help give indis
putable evidence of their involvement with the Soviet spy ring.\n\nThe fir
st of six public releases of translated VENONA messages was made in July 1
995 and included 49 messages about the Soviets' efforts to gain informatio
n on the U.S. atomic bomb research and the Manhattan Project. Over the cou
rse of five more releases\, all of the approximately 3\,000 VENONA transla
 tions were made public.
