X-WR-CALDESC:6 February 1802: Sir Charles Wheatstone\, inventor of the Play
fair cipher\, was born. \n\nExcerpt from Encyclopedia Britannica: Sir Char
les Wheatstone was an English physicist who popularized the Wheatstone bri
dge\, a device that accurately measured electrical resistance and became w
idely used in laboratories.\n\nWheatstone was appointed professor of exper
imental philosophy at King’s College\, London\, in 1834\, the same year th
at he used a revolving mirror in an experiment to measure the speed of ele
ctricity in a conductor. The same revolving mirror\, by his suggestion\, w
as later used in measurements of the speed of light. Three years later\, w
ith Sir William Fothergill Cooke of England\, he patented an early telegra
ph. In 1843\, he brought to notice the Wheatstone bridge\, a device invent
ed by British mathematician Samuel Christie.\n\nHis own inventions include
  the concertina\, a type of small accordion\, and the stereoscope\, a devi
ce for observing pictures in three dimensions still used in viewing X-rays
and aerial photographs. He initiated the use of electromagnets in electri
c generators and invented the Playfair cipher\, which is based on substitu
ting different pairs of letters for paired letters in the message. He was
 knighted in 1868.\n
