 ptology\, died. Captain Safford established the Naval cryptologic organiza
 tion after World War I\, and headed the effort more or less constantly unt
 il shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. His identification w
 ith the Naval cryptologic effort was so close that he was often referred t
 o as the <b>Friedman of the Navy.</b>\n\nLaurance Safford was inducted int
