X-WR-CALDESC:9 January 1942: Jerzy Różycki\, Polish Cipher Bureau mathemati
cian who helped break ENIGMA\, died when the M/S 'Lamoriciere\,' in which
he was crossing the Mediterranean in from France to Algeria\, sunk near th
 e Balearic Isles in a storm\, possibly after hitting a mine. \n\nIn 1929\,
while still a student\, Różycki\, proficient in German\, was one of twent
y-odd Poznań University mathematics students who accepted an invitation to
attend a secret cryptology course organized at a nearby military installa
tion by the Polish General Staff's Cipher Bureau\, headquartered in Warsaw
.\n\nFrom September 1932 Różycki served as a civilian cryptologist with th
 e Polish General Staff's Cipher Bureau\, housed till 1937 in Warsaw's Saxo
n Palace. He worked there together with fellow Poznań University mathemati
cs alumni and Cipher Bureau cryptology-course graduates Marian Rejewski an
d Henryk Zygalski.\n\nThe deciphering of the mathematical basis of the Eni
gma\, and the construction of a copy of the coding machine were the work o
f Polish mathematicians from the General Staff Code Bureau 4 (BS4): Marian
Rejewski\, Jerzy Różycki and Henryk Zygalski\, who broke the Enigma secre
t in 1932 and started to read the German secret dispatches. Based on their
research\, Warsaw based AVA company built several copies of the Enigma ma
chine in 1933.\n\nAfter Rejewski had reconstructed the German military Eni
gma machine in December 1932\, Różycki and Zygalski likewise worked at ong
oing development of methods and equipment to exploit Enigma decryption as
a source of intelligence. Różycki invented the 'clock' method\, which some
times made it possible to determine which of the machine's rotors was at t
he far right\, that is\, in the position where the rotor always revolved a
t every depression of a key. \n\nLearn more about the success of the Polis
