Dr. Ralph W. Jollensten - a Tribute from Raymond Reed

I knew “Dr J” over the course of my career, and found him to be an exemplary professional, who was a great mathematician and cryptanalyst.

I first encountered him in my time as an intern in the cryptanalysis carrier field.  He was the executive at that time, and I approached him about recognition for the special math premium pay scale.  He kindly advised me on the steps needed, and supported and endorsed my successful efforts.

Our paths crossed later, when he was executive of a cryptomath organization that promoted and assigned high performing career analysts and mathematicians.  He visited our office, where we were working on a high priority and complex diagnostic initiative.  He then personally contributed an important technical breakthrough, and modestly returned to his post.

A bit later, I was nominated to a key overseas tour, and encountered him at a farewell picnic for a group of departing families.  In his leadership role, Dr J was there to offer encouragement and support to the nominees.

My wife, son and daughter were there, and I have kept the memory of how Ralph engaged and played with my shy son, and made him feel things would be fine.

Though Dr J’s technical skills were great, his ability to see, appreciate and develop the talents of others, put people at ease, and make everyone feel it was going to be a fun day ahead, made him a standout leader and friend to all.  For those qualities, he lives in my top list of favorite folks at the “puzzle palace”.

In loving memory,

Ray Reed
